The best Building Self-Esteem techniques is to increase your daily deposits into your PBA:
Keep Promises To Yourself
Have you ever had family members or friends promise you something and not follow through?
After some time, you no longer trust them and their commitments to you mean nothing. The same thing occurs when you break promises to yourself; you stop trusting yourself and the commitments that you lay out.
Phrases that go along with losing trust in yourself when you don’t follow through include:
- “I am going to get up at 6am tomorrow morning”
- “I am going to get my homework done right when I get home:
- “I am going to start working out tomorrow”
Do Small Acts of Kindness
Psychiatrists say, “…if you ever feel depressed, the best thing to do is to do something for someone else.”
Helping other people people helps you focus outward, not inward.
It is hard to be depressed while serving someone else; a by-product of helping others is feeling wonderful yourself.
To feel like a million bucks you can:
- Go out of your way to say hello
- Write a thank you note
- Help someone else have a better life
Be Gentle With Yourself
Don’t expect yourself to be perfect by tomorrow morning, be patient and give yourself time to grow. It means learning to laugh at all the stupid things you do.
By forgiving yourself when you mess up you can clearly learn what went wrong and why. Then, drop it and move on. Letting go of a burden and giving yourself a second chance is what most people need.
- Rita Mae Brown says, “One of the keys to happiness is a bad memory”
- Whitney Houston sings, “learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all”
Out of these three, which one will be the hardest for you? What will be easiest?
- Other words for honest:
Judy Garland put it this way:
Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else”
Honesty in Actions
It takes courage to be honest and will build inner strength. You can’t do something wrong and feel right.
You’ve gotta take time out for yourself, to renew and to relax. If you don’t, you’ll lose your zest for life.”
Everyone has their own sanctuary of some sort where they can escape their surroundings and renew their spirits:
- While showering
Where ever you decide to find some time for yourself to get away “from it all”, it gives you time to relax, have a good cry, etc.
If you can’t find a place a refuge, there are always other ways to renew your spirits:
- Watching old movies
- Play a musical instrument
- Talking with friends
- Writing in your journal
Tap Into Your Talents
Finding and then developing a talent, hobby, or special interest can be one of the single greatest deposits you can make into your PBA.”
Talents come in a variety of packages and we all have them:
- Fast learner
- Accepting of others
- Musically inclined
- Board Games
- Collecting something
When you do something you like doing and have a talent for – it’s exhilarating. It’s a form of self-expression…it builds esteem.”
